Swiftkey has been the best 3rd party input app for the Android devices. Till now the app had costed $3.99 for download. But now the company has decided to make it available for free by making alternate plans for monetization. According to the SwiftKey’s chief marketing officer, the app will make money by in-app purchase of premium themes, some of which will be free too.Old users of the app who have paid for the app will be able to download premium pack of 10 themes worth $4.99 for free as a bonus.
The app is available in 66 languages and is installed on more than 200 million devices. By becoming free this count will increase rapidly. Chief marketing officer Joe Braidwood, to Fast company in interview, said “In the States, someone would say, ‘Do I buy this app or a coffee?’ In India, it’s ‘Do I buy this app or food for a couple days?'” which became controversial and people started tweeting by critisizing his view on Indian economy. But then he apologized and told them that it was not to disparage anyone living in India but to make it reach everyone.
Swiftkey’s intelligent prediction engine offers better contextual suggestions and spell correction features. It also has a flow input feature by which the user can slide over the keys to type the word intended.
The announcement of iOS8’s support to to 3rd party keyboard have already made the team work on its iOS variant of the app. But as FastCompany notes, this is not Swiftkey’s first move into the iOS. But it has already made a show-off of its power with a Swiftkey note taking app.
