Is the Yahoo Partnership with Bing a Great Thing?

If you’ve been following the tech space lately you will have noticed that Yahoo just shut down its Site Explorer service, due to the fact that it has been merged with Bing.

The Site Explorer is one of the best tools offered by Yahoo, and I can hardly do a day without it on my yahoo web hosting and midphase coupon blog. Below is a message from Yahoo about it:

With the completion of algorithmic transition to Bing, Yahoo! Search has merged Site Explorer into Bing Webmaster Tools. Webmasters should now be using the Bing Webmaster Tools to ensure that their websites continue to get high quality organic search traffic from Bing and Yahoo!. Site Explorer services will not be available from November 21, 2011.

As many of you are already aware, Yahoo signed an agreement with Bing in 2009 and went in a partnership giving Bing exclusive rights to Yahoo products. This means Bing can use Yahoo results as they see fit (which they are already doing), and they can also use any other Yahoo technology they want – and I think this is what led to the Yahoo Site Explorer service being closed.

Personally, I think Yahoo’s partnership is only beneficial to Bing, and that it is detrimental to both Yahoo and its users, and I’ll be sharing why below.

Detriment to Yahoo Users

The number one disadvantage of Yahoo’s partnership with Bing is that it is leading to poor results for Yahoo users. There are several reasons for this, and one great example is with the Yahoo Site Explorer service. Even though a lot of SEOs use the Yahoo Site Explorer service every day, Yahoo had to merge with Bing (which eventually made some services unavailable) and shut down one of its most valuable services, and as a result referring its users to Bing.

I hardly use any Yahoo services these days, and the Site Explorer service that I use regularly was just shut down, and as a result drawing me further away from Yahoo.

I Believe Only Bing is Benefiting

Another thing about the partnership between Yahoo and Bing is that only Bing is benefiting. Think about it; in terms of profit, exposure and results, Bing gains to gain the most. Bing is only a rising search engine, and since its partnership with Yahoo it has experienced significant growth whereas Yahoo keeps on going down every day.

Is Bing Slowly Buying Yahoo?

The rate at which things are going brought a suggestion to my mind, is Bing slowly trying to buy Yahoo? Just take a look at it. Why is it only Bing that gets to enjoy all these with Yahoo? Why is Yahoo doing all this with little to no thought about what they stand to benefit? Why is Yahoo doing this with little too no consideration for their users. Seriously, I know Yahoo has a reputation for not giving a damn about their users, but in a situation like this they stand to lose a lot, and I think the only explanation is that Bing might be trying to buy them.

I’m not sure though, just a speculation!
